College Summit Workshop Comes to Eastern

College Summit participantsEastern played host to a College Summit workshop on Aug. 2-5 to assist bright, low-income students in advancing to college. Educators worked with College Summit staff to create a postsecondary planning structure for schools, including a regular, for-credit College Summit class with detailed curriculum, regular teacher training, and online tools to help both teachers and students manage college applications.

In the College Summit model, 20 percent of the rising senior class attends a four-day workshop on a college campus where they get a head start on college applications, learn how to effectively write a personal statement, meet one-on-one with a guidance counselor, learn the basics of financial aid and gain concrete skills in self-advocacy. The Eastern workshop included students, school administrators, and teachers from the Hartford Public School System, as well as students from the Bronx High School for Writing and Communications and Franklin K. Lane High School, both located in New York City.

Fire Department and Eastern Conduct Confined Space Rescue Drill

On Aug. 16, the Willimantic Fire Department (WFD) practiced a confined space rescue drill between Hurley Hall and the parking garage. Members of the WFD entered a manhole in the Hurley Hall parking lot and traversed a 20-foot vertical drop leading into a 60-inch pipe running horizontally to the parking garage. Before entering, they performed air sampling to ensure that levels and air quality were safe to enter. The UConn Fire Department was also on hand for the drill.

Eastern’s Akus Gallery Exhibits “Convergence”

Convergence Invite

The Akus Gallery proudly presents “Convergence: Collaborative and Individual Works by Trifocal Projects” through Oct. 4. Admission is free and open to the community. Trifocal Projects members say their nationally-exhibited artwork speaks to “specific cultural, political and conceptual ideas.” Trifocal Projects is a large-scale installation project unlike the work of the individual artists. For their Akus Gallery exhibition, they will exhibit a collection of group work as well as several works by individual members.

The three artists comprising Trifocal Projects are Todd Jokl, Jessica Schwind and Joseph Smolinski; each graduated in 2001 with an M.F.A. degree from the University of Connecticut. Their works have individually been displayed in such places as New Haven; Hartford; San Francisco; New York City; Youngstown, OH; San Antonio, TX; and Alsdorf, Germany. The Akus Gallery is open from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 1– 7 p.m. Thursdays, and 2 – 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It is closed Mondays and Fridays. The gallery is located on the lower level of Shafer Hall at the intersection of Windham and Valley Streets. www.easternct.edu/depts/akus.
